Grow a garden filled with  Mexican Hat wildflowers, from freshly harvested Ratibida columnifera flower seeds. Mexican Hat is a stunning wildflower that grows quickly, flowering all summer long, until late fall. It's blooms resemble that of a sombrero, displaying oblong centers, accented by beautiful, multicolored petals. Each petal consists of a mix between red, orange and yellow. These beauties are sure to attract an array of beneficial insects, such as butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds and more.

The Mexican hat is mainly categorized as a biennial / perennial flowering plant. It will establish a deep root system, later wilting on the surface, due to harsh frost. The plants will return the following Spring however, after all danger of frost has passed. Mexican Hat wildflower will grow to a mature height of anywhere between 12 inches, up to 36 inches tall. Though it is quite drought tolerant, a bit of moisture will make its beautiful blooms last longer through the season.

This deer resistant wildflower looks great in a wide open area, sown by the masses or even used as a border plant, along driveways, walkways & fences. The plants produce long, slender stems, sow they look best when crowded together.

Sowing The Seed

Mexican Hat is best established directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Prior to sowing, make sure that you remove all unwanted plant life & weeds from the sowing area. Till the soil, or replace it with fresh soil. Scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, barely covering with 1/8" of topsoil. These seeds will require a bit of direct sunlight to properly germinate.

Growing Conditions

Ratibida columnifera, Mexican Hate flowers will enjoy an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day. It grows quickly in temperatures that are anywhere between 65F to 80F. The soil should be loamy and well drained, though it is quite adaptable to rich soils as well. Adding a light compost to any areas of hard, compact soil can increase drainage. Although it is a drought tolerant plant, it is best to keep them a bit moist in periods of extreme heat. Water the seeds lightly with a mist setting until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Germination for your Mexican Hat wildflowers will begin within 10 to 18 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 12 to 36 inches tall and can be spaced sparingly, since they are more attractive when sown by the masses. Mexican Hat is a gorgeous wildflower that is oftentimes seen growing wild, along railroads, highways, empty fields and prairies & plains as well.
