Grow Tidy Tips from fresh Layia platyglossa flower seeds. Tidy Tips will produce gorgeous, yellow blooms that are accented by white tips. The flower heads are formed much like a daisy and will span 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Each plant will grow to a mature height of 8 to 12 inches tall, making the Tidy Tips plant is perfect for flower beds, borders and in a naturalized setting.

Tidy Tips are grown as an annual flowering plant, meaning they will grow quickly, bloom profusely and later die with the first frost. Like most other annual flowering plants, the Tidy Tips flower can easily regrow the following season, from seeds that fall to the bare ground beneath.

Try combining Tidy Tips flower seeds with other low growing flowers, such as daisies, violas, snapdragons and more.

Sowing The Seed

Tidy Tips flower seeds can be started directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. The sowing area should be cleared of all unwanted plant life and weeds. Turn the soil, or throw down new soil in it’s place. Scatter the Tidy Tips flower seeds to the bare ground, barely covering with 1/16” of topsoil. Tidy Tips flower seeds will require light to properly germinate outdoors.

Growing Conditions

Layia platyglossa or “Tidy Tips” will require an area that receives full sunlight for the majority of the day. The temperatures should be around 70F or above for successful growth. The soil should be rich, but also well drained. Combining a compost mixture to hard compact soil will increase your drainage. Water your Tidy Tips flower seeds daily so that the soil is not allowed to fully dry out, just until germination occurs. After plants are established, the plants will be more tolerant to arid conditions and drought.

Germination & Growth

Tidy Tips flower seeds will begin to germinate within 7 to 21 days after they are successfully sown. The plants will mature to a height of around 6 to 12 inches tall, displaying beautiful yellow, daisy-like flowers with white tips. Reaching a width of about 6 inches, they will need to be spaced roughly 4 to 6 inches apart from one another. Enjoy blooms through the spring months, and resow in early summer to prolong your bloom season.
