Grow Fenugreek herbs / vegetables, from freshly harvested Trigonella foenum-graecum seeds. Fenugreek is harvested for culinary uses. It's leaves can be used as an herb, fresh or dried, while it's seeds are used as a spice and it's young leaves, sprouts and greens are used as a vegetable. When you open up your package of Fenugreek seeds, you will immediately notice the strong fragrance that the seeds give off. They can be used whole, or ground up to add flavoring to many Indian dishes and curries. The sprouts are typically a few inches tall and can be ready for picking within 3 to 5 days after sprouting. Grown plants reach a mature height of 16 to 18 inches.

Fenugreek is of course an annual herb. It will grow very rapidly from freshly harvested seeds, to be harvested and consumed soon after. If the plants are allowed to go to seed, or "bolt," you can collect the seeds for additional sowings.

Sowing The Seed

Fenugreek herb seeds can be sown directly out in the garden, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Clear your sowing area of all unwanted plant life and weeds. Turn the soil, or replace it with a new, fresh sowing medium. Scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, covering thinly with 1/4" of topsoil.

Growing Conditions

Fenugreek will thrive in an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day. The plants will require temperatures of at least 70F and a sowing medium that is both rich and fertile, but dry and warm. The soil should also be well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a mist setting or spray bottle.

Germination & Growth

Fenugreek seeds will typically take anywhere between 7 and 14 days to germinate. The plants can grow to a mature height of roughly 16 to 18 inches tall, while young sprouts can be harvested at a few inches tall. The plants can be spaced about 8 inches apart, in rows spaced 18 inches apart from one another. All parts of the Fenugreek herb are considered edible, even the seeds, which can be ground up and added to soups, curries and other culinary dishes.
