Single Packet of 500 Seeds
Grow a garden filled with Saltwort herbs, from freshly harvested Salsola komarovii seeds. Saltwort is an heirloom herb that is native to the salt marshes of Japan. These herbs display long, succulent leaves with an incredibly appealing, crunchy texture. The plants themselves reach a mature height of roughly 8 to 18 inches tall and can spread 6 to 10 inches wide. Saltwort is high in vitamins and minerals and is primarily used as an additive to sushi and salads. The leaves can be picked and steamed for a healthy side dish as well.
Saltwort is considered to be an annual herb. Annuals such as this will grow quickly, producing leaves for harvesting, through the summer months. The plants are best harvested when they are young, to prevent woody stems from developing. Saltwort herbs are typically harvested within 40 to 55 days.
Sowing The Seed
Saltwort herbs are best established directly outdoors, in the Spring to mid Summer months. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted plant life and weeds. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep, lightly covering them with topsoil.
Saltwort herbs will thrive in areas of direct sunlight, or partial shade as well. Temperatures should be kept at around 70F to 80F for optimal growth. Saline enriched soils are recommended, however Saltwort does fine in light saline soils as well, just make sure that the soil is well drained. To improve your drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to any areas that consist of hard, compact soil. Water daily with a light mist setting, until germination has occurred.
Germination & Growth
Saltwort seeds will typically germinate within 7 to 21 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of roughly 8 to 18 inches tall and can be spaced about 4 to 6 inches apart from one another. Saltwort is best harvested when they are young, to prevent woody stems from developing.
