Grow Green Globe Artichokes, from freshly harvested Cynaria scolymus seeds. Green Globe is an heirloom variety of Artichoke that produces large, 3 to 5 inch, green heads. Each plant will reach a mature height of anywhere between 3 and 6 feet tall, and will produce a fair yield of 3 to 4 heads through the summer months. Green Globe is ready for harvesting in roughly 120 days.

The Green Globe Artichoke is a perennial flowering vegetable. Perennials such as this will establish a deep root system, which will allow the plants to remain dormant during the cooler temperatures of Winter. Green Globe Artichokes will establish new growth each year for at least 5 years, thus producing new crops each year

Sowing Artichoke Seeds

Start by soaking your Artichoke seeds in warm water for 12 hours prior to sowing. The seeds can also be prepped through a method of scarification as well. Sow your seeds indoors, in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost, or direct sow outdoors, when the weather has become warm. The seeds will need to be sown at approximately 1/2” deep. Transplant when all danger of frost passes.

Growing Conditions

Artichoke plants will thrive in the warm months of Summer and are best established in an area of full sunlight. They require a light, fertile soil. A loam or sandy soil is recommended. You will also want to make sure that your sowing medium is well drained as well. To improve drainage, we advise you to add a light compost to any area that contains hard, compact soil. Water daily until germination has successfully occurred.

Germination & Growth

Artichoke seeds can be slow to germinate, typically taking up to 8 weeks. The plants will grow to a mature height of roughly 3 to 6 feet tall and can be spaced about 2 to 3 feet apart, in rows that are spaced about 4 feet apart. Harvest at the end of your Summer season or in the early Autumn season.

Harvesting Artichokes

When late July, early August rolls around, it's time to get to harvesting! Once the flower buds form, do not water stress the plant. Harvest buds when they reach full size but before the bracts (bud leaves) begin to open. Cut off the bud with 2-3 inches of stem. 120 Days from first growth.

I soaked the seeds. Instructions stated 12 hours in warm water and I actually soaked them for 18 hours. I planted on July 6 and by the 17th six of them sprouted. I planted them in a 30 gallon grow bag. Im in a desert climate so it has been particularly hot and I have been watering twice a day. The grow bag is in full sun most of the day. So far so good. Oh, package states 30 seeds - I actually got 42.

Quick germination (I started indoors and used a heat mat) and the plants are looking healthy so far.

I am so thrilled that my artichoke plants are coming up quite nicely!! I planted these not quite three weeks ago, and did NOT expect all the seeds to sprout. So excited to keep these going in larger pots and eventually into the ground. Ill definitely be buying more of these high quality seeds.
