Description

Grenadin white carnations can be a great addition to your garden. These beautiful flowers will stand out from the rest of your plants with their large flowers and pale white color. If you're not sure whether or not they will be a good fit, take a look at some of these essential details.

Plant Characteristics

Grenadin white carnations, as the name implies, are white flowers with broad petals. Each overlapping petal has subtly jagged edges, and the petals fit together to make a beautiful round flower. They are part of an entire family of carnations, which include grenadin pink, laced Romeo, and red rocket. Due to their beauty and subtle smell, many florists include them in boutonnieres.

Growth Habits

Growing up to 24 inches tall and 12 inches wide, grenadin white carnations are considered a "medium"-sized flower. They mainly come from Colombia, though they are grown in the United States as well and in a variety of conditions. When they have finished growing, they are excellent as a cut flowers because of their unique shape and beauty.

Other Information

These flowers will attract many creatures, such as butterflies and hummingbirds, to your yard. They are also fragrant, with a relatively subtle yet delicious scent. Their white color pairs well with many other plants in a garden and their growing seasons are very versatile.

Sowing The Seed

Clove Carnation seeds are best established in starter pots, for transplanting outdoors later on. Start in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow 3 to 4 seeds per pot, at a depth of 1/16" under topsoil. The seeds will require a bit of direct light to properly germinate, so it is recommended that you do not bury the seeds deeper than the recommended sowing depth above. Transplant entire pots, or direct sow outdoors, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

Growing Conditions

Carnations will thrive in an area of full sunlight for at least 5 to 6 hours daily. The temperatures should be at least 70F and the soil will need to be fertile, yet well drained. To increase your drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to any areas that consist of hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily, with a mist setting, so that the soil remains moist until germination has occurred.

Germination & Growth

Your seeds will typically take anywhere between 7 and 21 days to germinate successfully. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall and can be spaced 12 inches apart from one another. This variety produces 1.5 to 2 inch, double petaled blooms, in a creamy white coloring. The plants release a refreshing, clove like scent, attracting an array of beneficial insects to the garden.
