Description

The Wee B Little Pumpkin is an adorable addition to the pumpkin family. With a general diameter of around 3 - 5 inches, and a weight of around 8 to 16 ounces, these little orange beauties are about the size of a baseball. They do resemble their larger family members in appearance, with the bright orange color, rounded shape, and flat bottom, they just happen to fit in your palm!

This little pumpkin grows on smaller bushes with short vines, which is great for gardens that don't have a lot of space. You can use Wee B Little Pumpkins for the same things you would use the larger varieties for. They are perfect for fall cooking, and with so many different recipes out there, they aren't just for pies anymore! Certainly don't hesitate to make your pumpkin pie out of them however. The leftover seeds can be roasted and salted for a tasty snack as well.

Wee B Little Pumpkins are also great for using in your fall decor. Their skin is excellent for painting and their small size makes them great with kids.

Wee B Little Pumpkins can be prone to a powdery mildew and rotting of the blossom, which is usually solved by making sure your soil is drained properly. It is recommended to create a raised mound to plant them in if your soil doesn't drain well enough. Other options could be to grow the plants vertically up a stake or trellis, or placing straw under the plants. Allowing better airflow will reduce the risk of powdery mildew to the leaves and the rest of the plant.

These plants are also prone to pests such as squash bugs, squash vine borers, and cucumber beetles, to name a few. One way to help avoid pests would be to place floating row covers over the plants to help keep bugs away. A good, yet non harmful pesticide would also be a good idea.

Have fun with Wee B Little Pumpkins in your own garden this year!

Sowing The Seed

Pumpkins are best established directly outdoors in the summer. Be sure to select a large enough area for the plants to grow and vine outwards. Remove all unwanted plant life from your sowing area, turning the dirt, or replacing the dirt with a fresh soil. Create mounds of dirt or “hills” roughly 18 to 24 inches wide and at least 8 inches high. Sow 4 seeds per mound at a depth of 1 inch under topsoil. (See "Germination & Growth" for spacing and other growth habits)

Growing Conditions

Pumpkins enjoy the heat of summer and will thrive in temperatures that are above 75F. The soil should be rich in organic matter, but will also need to be well drained. To improve drainage, it is recommended to add a light compost to any hard, compacted soil in the sowing area. This will prevent the roots from rotting. Water the seeds daily with a mild setting so that the seeds and seedlings are kept moist until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Wee B Little Pumpkin seeds will begin to sprout open in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of 1 to 2 feet tall and spread to a short vining length of only 2 to 3 feet long. These plants will not need as large of an area, like traditional pumpkins would, and can be spaced by hills or mounds of dirt, rather than rows. As explained above mounds should be 18 to 24 inches wide and at least 8 inches tall. Space each mound at least 3 feet apart from one another. When sprouts become visible, direct the vines outwards towards areas that do not contain other plant life.

Harvesting Wee B Little Pumpkins

When your vines start to establish pumpkins, be sure to place straw under the fruits to prevent them from touching the bare ground beneath, as this can cause rotting. Your Wee B Little Pumpkins will be ready for harvest in roughly 90 to 100 days after first sprouts appear. Cut the stems at least 2 to 3 inches from the actual fruits, otherwise the fruits will rot.
