80 Seeds

Grow a garden filled with Black Cherry Tomatoes, from freshly harvested Solanum lycopersicum seeds. Black Cherry Tomatoes are not the most visually appealing fruit on the planet, but they sure are delicious. Like most of the Black Tomatoes in our seed shop, Black Cherry Tomatoes will go great in salads, or eaten as a snack. The plants are indeterminate and will grow to a mature height of roughly 6 to 8 feet tall. They can also spread to a width of 3 feet wide. Each fruit will grow to about 1.5 inches in diameter, displaying a dark red, almost brown color. The use of stakes and / or a trellis can be beneficial in growing Black Cherry Tomatoes, since the fruits can pull the vines downwards.

Black Cherry Tomatoes are categorized as annual vining plants that produce a bountiful harvest for a single growing season. The plants will grow quickly through the late Spring and Summer months, producing hundreds of delicious tomatoes, and will later wilt with the first killing frost. Seeds can be collected from some of the fruits to regrow the following season. Black Cherry Tomatoes will be ready for harvesting in about 65 days after first sprouts are visible.

Sowing The Seed

For many Northern gardeners, tomatoes are best established indoors, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Start in peat pots, sowing each seed at a depth of 1/4” under topsoil. The use of small stakes is recommended to support the plants as they grow. When the weather is warm & all danger of frost has passed, transplant or direct sow your tomatoes outdoors. The continued use of stakes will benefit a healthy tomato plant.

Growing Conditions

Tomatoes will thrive in an area of full sunlight with temperatures of at least 60F or higher. They prefer a rich soil, that is filled with organic matter. Make sure that the sowing medium is also well drained, as this is very important for a healthy root structure. Adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil, can increase drainage. Water daily with a light moisture setting to avoid drowing the seedlings.

Germination & Growth

Your tomato seeds will begin to germinate in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants themselves will grow to a mature height of 6 to 8 feet tall and can spread up to 3 feet wide. Tomato plants will need a fair amount of area to grow and can be spaced about 36 inches apart from one another, in rows spaced 36 inches apart. Stakes & supports are crucial to growing tomato plants, since the fruits can weigh down the vines.

Harvesting Black Cherry Tomatoes

Black Cherry Tomatoes are ready for harvesting in about 65 days, after the fruits will turn from green to dark burgundy-red. Simply pick the fruits from their vines. Rinse and store them in the fridge, or eat them fresh.
