Description

Grow a garden filled with the lovely Tall White Cornflower, from freshly harvested Centaurea cyanus flower seeds. Tall White Cornflower is a beloved annual flower, which produces pure white blooms. The plants grow to a mature height of roughly 28 to 36 inches tall. Each flower head is roughly 1 to 1.25 inches in diameter, displaying tooth shaped florets. The blooms are known to attract native honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects to the garden as well.

Categorized as an annual flowering plant, the Tall White Cornflower will grow quickly, bloom profusely through the summer months and later die with the first frost. The seeds of these beautiful flowers can be collected at the end of the season, when the flower heads have dried out. Resow the following season, or allow seeds to drop to the bare ground beneath for fresh, new growth the following year.

Tall White Cornflower is established in many insectary's and butterfly gardens. The plants also mix will with other wildflowers and can be seen in naturalized settings, along railways, in open fields and in meadows. You can use Tall White Cornflower in a number of settings, such as flower beds, along fences, walkways & driveways, or even in pots & containers as well. Cornflower plants are among one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow from seed.

Sowing The Seed

Cornflowers are best established directly outdoors, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted plant life and weeds. Turn the dirt, or replace it with a fresh sowing medium. Scatter the seeds to the bare ground, spacing them out accordingly. Cover thinly, with 1/16" of topsoil so that direct sunlight can reach the seeds.

Growing Conditions

Cornflowers thrive in warm locations of roughly 65F to 70F or more. They require an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day, and are adaptable to almost any soil condition. You must make sure that your sowing area is however, well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily until germination has occurred. Once established, Cornflower can be quite drought tolerant.

Germination & Growth

Cornflower seeds are known to germinate in as little as 14 to 21 days after sowing. The Tall White Cornflower will grow to a mature height of roughly 28 to 36 inches tall, producing lovely, pure white, tooth shaped florets. Each flower can be spaced about 6 to 12 inches apart from one another. Tall White Cornflower is known to attract native honeybees, bumblebees, hummingbirds & butterflies as well.
