Do you have an area that's a bit shady? Try our Partial Shade Wildflower Mixture, specifically blended for areas that receive less than 6 hours of direct sunlight. The plants in this mixture grow anywhere between 4 and 48 inches tall, with the vast majority averaging in at around 20 to 24 inches tall. Partial Shade will produce both annual and perennial wildflowers, 59% of which are annuals and 15% of which are perennial. the remaining 26% of the mix is consisted of biennial flowering plants.

Annuals will grow quickly from freshly harvested seeds. They bloom profusely through the summer months and later die with the first killing frost. Seeds can easily drop to the bare ground beneath, regrowing fresh plant life the following year. Perennials will establish a deep root system within the first year of growth. The plant life will then wilt on the surface, later returning the following Spring. This blend of Wildflowers will produce plants in practically every color of the rainbow, from red, orange, yellow, blue, violet and even green & white. A few popular favorites are Asclepias, Aquilegia, Cosmos, Nasturtium, Zinnias, Palaver & more.

the basics

SOIL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART

The first step to a successful wildflower garden is the soil. If you use the wrong sowing medium, you may not end up with the flower garden that you, or your pollinator friends are looking for.
Always choose a quality topsoil to spread your wildflower seed mixture onto. If the soil is rocky, sandy or filled with clay, the seed will not establish very well. You want to make sure to choose a fluffy black medium. DO NOT use mulch.

Time to scatter the seed!

Keep in mind that each seed has the potential to become a fully grown plant. This means it can easily take up 6" of width!
When scattering your wildflower seeds to the surface of the soil, spread the seed sparingly. For the best variety, drop anywhere from 15 to 20 seeds per square foot.
Pat the seed into place making sure they are secure, but do not bury the seeds by placing soil on top.

WATER DAILY!

After sowing the seeds, make sure to water them directly after to keep them in place and get them going.
Water them daily to ensure that the soil is not dried out.
A shower setting is best, just make sure not to allow water to gather up, otherwise the seeds will wash away or pool up in the same area. If this happens, this can disturb the wide variety of color you are looking for.

germination & growth

At least half of the seeds in this mixture will begin to sprout within the first 7 to 10 days after sowing. The rest will follow shortly after.

The plants can take a few weeks to grow, reaching a mature height of anywhere between 4 and 48 inches tall. The vast majority of your wildflowers will grow between 20 and 24 inches tall.

If the seeds were distributed evenly enough, your coverage will be pretty thick. Within 5 to 8 weeks after sowing, plenty of annual flowers will begin to bloom. Perennials & biennials will follow suit, later in the season, or in the following year.

Many annuals will readily self seed, dropping to the bare ground beneath, at the end of the Autumn season. Check below for the differences between Annuals, Biennials and Perennials.

Annuals - These are plants that grow quickly from seed and later bloom during the Summer months up until Fall. When the end of the season arrives, you can collect seed from the spent flower heads after they dry out. You can also pluck the flower heads from the plants and lay them under the plants before clearing the area so they can grow the following year.

Biennials - Biennials take 2 years to grow and flower. The first year you will typically see a strong stem and leaf structure. The roots will remain underground as the growing season comes to an end and the plants will continue growing the following Spring after the last frost. In year two you can expect blooms.

Perennials -  These are plants that return yearly from a strong root structure. Typically in year one, the plants will form greenery and do not flower until year 2 and on. If sown early enough in the Spring season, some flowers do appear however.
