Are you an early riser? If so, you may just catch a glimpse of these glorious white flowers opening! The Pearly Gates Morning Glory (Ipomoea tricolor) produces scores of trumpet-shaped blossoms, each two to four inches in diameter. Twisted into a spiral when closed, the flowers unravel before dawn into large stunning pearly white blooms, ready for the first pollinators of the morning. But don't worry if you don't get out at dawn - the flowers last well on the vine so you'll enjoy them all day.

First cultivated by the Aztecs and inhabitants of the Oaxaca region of Mexico, Pearly Gates variety is a pure white mutation of Heavenly Blue Morning Glories. Pearly Gates is a prolific bloomer and produces flowers from early summer through late fall. Although it prefers well-drained moist soil, it will establish itself even in poorer soil, if the soil is tilled. Once established, it requires little care other than watering once or twice a week. To promote continued flowering, remove spent blooms regularly.

The heart-shaped dark green leaves offer a lush backdrop to the blossoms and the vine climbs vigorously as high as 13 feet, making it a perfect plant for a trellis, garden gateway or pergola. It will love mailbox posts, fences and hanging baskets too! Planting it together with blue or purple varieties makes a stunning display.

Sown as an annual, Pearly Gates prefers full sun to very light shade and is hardy in all zones. If you want Pearly Gates to self-sow and return in the following spring, simply leave some of the spent flowers on the vine. The flowers dry and drop their seeds - and you'll look forward to another season of heavenly white flowers.

SOWING THE SEED

Morning Glory seeds should be prepped by a method of scarification and/or soaking, prior to sowing. Nick the seeds with sandpaper or a knife and soak in warm water, for 24 hours. If starting indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Place the seeds at a depth of 1/2" under topsoil. Transplant, or direct sow into the garden when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Morning Glory plants will thrive in the heat of summer and prefer an area of full sunlight. Temperatures should be at least 70F or higher. The soil should be average to sandy, but also well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily until germination has occurred, watering less frequently as time goes on.

GERMINATION & GROWTH

Morning Glory seeds typically germinate within roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants are known to grow and establish with the support of a fence or trellis. Each vine can grow to a mature length of 7 to 13 feet long, displaying large, trumpet shaped flowers all summer long. Each plant can be spaced about 18 to 24 inches apart, depending on the thickness of coverage you desire. Morning Glories are known to attract all sorts of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees & hummingbirds as well.
